About the Department

Our Mission: To provide life safety, fire safety, and education to the citizens and visitors of Minocqua with dedication, innovation, and compassion.

Since our founding in 1894, the Minocqua Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department has been committed to protecting, caring for, educating, and serving our community. For nearly 130 years, the citizens of Minocqua and surrounding areas have united to help their neighbors and visitors in their greatest time of need.

Our history is rich with milestones, including the purchase of our first fire truck in 1926, which remains preserved in our history room. Over the decades, we’ve continually updated our trucks, boats, snowmobiles, and equipment to stay at the forefront of fire and rescue services.

Minocqua spans 178 square miles, with an equalized property valuation of over $2.2 billion. That’s a lot of land, people, and property to protect—and our dedicated volunteers are up to the task.

Our innovation shines through in our history. In 1964, our forefathers established one of the first Rescue Squad teams in the country. We’ve continued to lead in fire and rescue tactics, equipment, and mindset, always striving to be the best for our community.

To cover our wide area effectively, we operate out of two stations. Our main station, built in 2017, is a 14,100-square-foot facility featuring four double-deep apparatus bays, a large training room, offices, a fitness center, a kitchen/lounge, and a history room. Station 2, located in the Bo-di-Lac area, has been a community staple for over 49 years, with two buildings housing four bays and a meeting room.

Community education is also a priority for us. We actively engage with local schools, the town library, and youth organizations, offering fire prevention classes for children and training sessions for adults and businesses. We believe, along with the National Fire Protection Association, that understanding how and why fires start can make the world a safer place.

If you’re ever in the area, we’d love to meet you and give you a tour of our station. Minocqua is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers willing to risk their lives to save yours.
